Status of your Application

Applications are processed in the order that they are received. If your Application is submitted completely and correctly, it will be processed and approved in no more than thirty business days for in state and 60 business days for out of state. If there is an item missing from your Application, or you failed to submit the correct documentation, you will be notified in writing by the Board office.

All applications are date-stamped upon entering the office and processed in the order in which they are received. It is your responsibility to submit a complete application. Use the checklist on the last page of the application direction book to ensure that you have submitted a complete application. Applications which have been submitted incompletely and require that you submit further or correct information will restart the thirty business day processing time when again received and date stamped. Applications that are submitted incorrectly or incomplete take two to three-times longer to process.

It is best to send all of the required documents together with your Application. By doing this you know when the documents are sent. Complete Applications are quickly processed. If you must have a transcript, moral character form or out of state verification form mailed to the Board separately from your application, that information is filed with your other information when it arrives. However, it is best to avoid this route if at all possible. It is best to have the information sent to you and you send it to the Board so you will know it has been sent.

The Board staff will not confirm that your Application package has or has not arrived. You are encouraged to use the pre-addressed, white envelope inside your Application package, or a commercial mailing company that will allow you to track your mail’s arrival. Please keep in mind that if you send your Application by way of a commercial mailing company, it may not make a difference in the time that your Application is processed.

Do not call within the thirty business days to find out what your license processing status is, even if you have a job pending. It is your responsibility to inform your future employer of the Rules of the Board and its Application processing procedures. (Please feel free to print this information for your future employer).

The Board staff updates the webpage weekly as they license applicants. If you have been issued a license number, it will be on the website: www.bmbt.org. There is a link on the front page of the site that says, "Look up a licensee." Make sure to read the information about how to enter your name correctly. The field in which you are to type is case sensitive.

Relocating to NC From Another State in Which You Hold a License

North Carolina does not have reciprocity with any state. The Board no longer grants provisional licenses or offers grandfathering. If you hold a license from another state, you must still apply to the North Carolina Board for a North Carolina license. You must have graduated from a massage and bodywork therapy school program with at least 500 classroom hours of board approved course work and you must be currently Nationally Certified. This Board does not require that you maintain your National status, however, it must be current when you apply. If you are not Nationally Certified, you must take and pass the National Exam. To contact the National Board, call 1-800-296-0664 or
www.ncbtmb.com

There are no exceptions to these requirements regardless of the years you have practiced or the number of degrees you hold.

If you attended an out-of-state school not currently approved by this board, the Board requires that you submit a copy of the school’s most current catalog which should include the program’s curriculum, and a copy of the school’s current license to operate. You will also need to include an original, sealed copy of your transcript and a photocopy of your diploma or certificate of completion. There are no waivers or exceptions to these requirements.  You may email the Board at admin@bmbt.org to find out if your out-of-state massage therapy program is currently approved by this Board.
